Ready-mix vs site-mixed concrete: which is right for your project?

For a small repair you might still mix concrete by hand on site. For a slab, columns, or anything structural, ready-mix concrete (RMC) has become the default for good reasons. Here is an honest comparison.

What each one is

Site-mixed concrete is batched on the construction site — cement, sand, aggregate, and water proportioned by hand or in a small mixer. Ready-mix concrete is batched to a precise mix design at a plant and delivered by transit mixer, ready to pour.

Consistency and quality

This is the biggest difference. A computer-controlled plant weighs every ingredient and holds the water-cement ratio steady, so each load matches the specified grade. Site mixing relies on volume-based "head pans" and judgement, so strength varies from batch to batch.

Every ready-mix dispatch from our plants comes with a batch slip recording the mix, and a 28-day cube test report from the same load — documentary proof of the strength you paid for. Site-mixed concrete rarely has that paper trail.

Speed, labour, and wastage

  • Speed: a transit mixer delivers several cubic metres in minutes; site mixing the same volume takes hours and a full crew.
  • Labour: RMC removes the mixing crew and the cement/sand/aggregate handling from your site.
  • Wastage: plant batching wastes far less material than repeated hand mixing, and there is no leftover cement bag or sand pile to manage.
  • Cleaner site: no stockpiles of raw materials blocking access.

Placing it where you need it

Ready-mix also opens up placement options. Concrete can be discharged straight down the chute at ground level, or pushed through a line pump to upper-floor slabs, columns, and pours the mixer cannot back up to. Site mixing usually means carrying concrete by hand, which limits how far and how high you can practically pour.

When site mixing still makes sense

Ready-mix is not always the answer. For a very small, non-structural job — a few wheelbarrows for a step, a small repair, a remote site a mixer cannot reach — hand mixing can be simpler. The crossover comes quickly though: once you are pouring a slab or anything load-bearing, RMC is usually cheaper once you account for labour, wastage, and the value of guaranteed strength.

For projects above roughly 50,000 m³, a third option exists: we can set up a dedicated batching plant on your site, combining RMC quality with on-site convenience.

Is ready-mix concrete more expensive than site mixing?
The per-cubic-metre rate can look higher, but once you include the cost of labour, a mixer, material handling and storage, and wastage, ready-mix is often cheaper for slabs and structural work — and you get guaranteed, documented strength.
Is ready-mix concrete good quality?
Yes — usually better than site-mixed, because every ingredient is weigh-batched to a controlled mix design and each load ships with a batch slip and a 28-day cube test report. That consistency is hard to match by hand on site.
How quickly do I need to pour ready-mix after it arrives?
Ready-mix should generally be placed within about 90–120 minutes of batching, before it starts to set. We schedule dispatch from the nearest plant so the concrete arrives workable; for continuous pours we stage multiple loads.
